This session of the 2024 Public Design Corps focuses on migrant housing throughout the state of Michigan. Over 19,000 migrant, H-2A, and seasonal farmworkers in Michigan living with suboptimal housing conditions, including heat exchange issues, site inconveniences, inferior building materials, etc.

Site Visits

We then started our site visits and interviews of personnel from these stakeholders. During site visits, we visited migrant labor housing camps, met with workers in the field, documented existing structures, and understood the living conditions they are provided.

Documenting in progress...

Despite meeting minimum housing standards provided by the MDARD, this property still has a few issues to note on.

Research and Redesign

We investigated material choices, air quality concerns, ventilation & building systems, and health & safety issues that impact this labor force. Eventually, our goal is to compile data around the existing quality of life conditions these temporary communities live within, and to update housing standards on behalf of MDARD, informing policy recommendations for Michigan's Migrant Labor Housing Program.
